Uno de los modelos más emblemáticos de la historia, el Ford todavía crea en muchos aficionados la más intensa de las admiraciones. Para su creación, como si se ya se esperaba de éste un clásico aún antes de su fabricación, se formó un comité para el diseño del coche, con la característica principal que sea atrayente para todo tipo de público, que en ese entonces estaba sediento de autos veloces y agresivos.
Así, en 1961 Lee Iacocca (entonces vicepresidente de la Ford Motor Company) formó el Comité Fairlane, cuyo punto de reunión era el mismo hotel Fairlane, e iniciaron la búsqueda de aquel auto casi perfecto. Como punto de partida, este coche debía ser ligero (comparado con los mastodontes de 2 toneladas de la época), sencillo, económicamente accesible, con las comodidades típicas de un deportivo europeo, es decir, asientos individuales, suaves acabados y palanca de cambios en el piso. Obviamente, para atraer la mayor cantidad de público posible, este auto debería tener todas las opciones imaginables de accesorios, tipo de carrocería, color del coche, motor, transmisión manual o automática, etc.
Ante la gran cantidad de variantes de este nuevo modelo, no hubo el tiempo suficiente de crear una base mecánica absolutamente nueva. Varios elementos del chasis y suspensión fueron tomados del Ford Falcon, y otras partes de diversos modelos de la marca. Terminado los trabajos de diseño, se inició una labor no menos importante: el marketing. Una curiosa forma de promoción fueron las "fotos secretas" del modelo a prueba, que incrementaron el interés por conocer la nueva joya de Ford. De esta manera, entre bombos y platillos se lanzó el Ford 64 1/2 durante la Feria Mundial de Nueva York el 17 de abril de 1964.

A pesar de que en el primer día de estreno se registraron más de 20000 pedidos, la rápida demanda fue satisfecha ya que los primeros Mustangs salieron de la fábricas de Dearbon, Metuchen y San José ya desde el 9 de marzo. El éxito fue total, pero lo mejor aún estaba por venir. Iacocca, aprovechando la relación estratégica que tenía con Carroll Shelby (preparador de los temibles Cobra que llevaban motores y chasis Ford), le encargó la construcción de un de competición, un verdadero pura sangre. De esta manera, a mediados de 1965 sale la versión más salvaje del Ford , el legendario Sheby GT350. Este auto, creado sobre la base del modelo Fastback, también lanzado en 1965, fue la delicia de todos los corredores y aficionados a las emociones fuertes que no tardaron en adquirirlo. De esta manera, el objetivo de que existía un de acuerdo al gusto de cada uno estaba cumplido.
