Historia de la banda
Michael y Andrew se conocieron en la escuela secundaria cuando Andrew separó a Michael de una pelea en la que estaba involucrado. Inmediatamente se hicieron amigos y se dieron cuenta de que estaban interesado en una sóla cosa, la música.
Todo comenzó cuando Kirk Pengilly y su mejor amigo de la escuela Tim Farriss decidieron desintegrar el grupo Giness, grupo que habían formado en 1971. Fue ahí cuando Tim tuvo la idea de juntar los talentos de su grupo con el grupo de su hermano menor Andrew: Michael, Garry y Andrew mismo.
El único factor necesario para completar la formación era un baterista. Si bien Jon Farriss había sido rechazado por el grupo Giness; en su segunda audición tuvo más suerte. Y así en marzo de 1977 la sexta pieza de la banda permitió que naciera lo que en ese tiempo fue "The Farriss Brothers".
En 1978 la banda se traslada desde Sydney hasta Perth, 3279 Km a través del interior de Australia. "The Farriss Brothers" pasa diez meses escribiendo, realizando y tocando en hoteles locales y pequeños pueblos.
En 1979 vuelven a Sydney, tocan primero en shows en el distrito del centro de la ciudad. Rebautizados como INXS, debutan en vivo el 1º de septiembre en el "Oceanview Hotel" en Toukley, y en mayo de 1980 sacan sus dos primeros singles: "Simple Simon" y "We are the vegetables", realizado en Australia por el sello independiente Deluxe. También fueron lanzados en Francia.
En octubre editan su álbum debut: "INXS", realizado en Australia, del cual se extrajo el single, y hit en Australia en aquel momento: "Just Keep Walking". El grupo hace una gira por toda la costa australiana recorriendo Melbourne, Sydney, Bresbane y tocando 7 noches a la semana.
En 1981 comienzan las giras "en serio": el tour "Fear and loathing" (miendo y aborrecimiento), el tour "Campus" (Ciudad Universitaria), el tour "Stay Young" (permanecer joven), el tour "With no name" (sin nombre), con un total de 300 presentaciones. En marzo de ese mismo año se edita en Australia el single "The Loved one", cover del hit australiano número 1 "The loved ones" de una banda de Melbourne de los 60, (INXS graba esta canción otra vez en 1987 para el álbum Kick). En octubre sacan su segundo álbum: "Underneath the colours". Exitoso en críticas y comercialmente, llega al top 15 de los charts australianos.
En enero de 1982 hacen una gira por primera vez en Nueva Zelanda. Una vez de vuelta en Australia graban "The one thing", producido por Mark Opitz. En abril Andrew, Michael y Kirk se lanzan en peregrinación por Inglaterra y América. En junio comienzan a grabar su tercer álbum: "Shabooh Shoobah", producido por Mark Opitz. En julio INXS firma con WEA Records para Australia. Se lanza el single The one thing, que llega al top 15. En octubre lanzan en Australia Shabooh Shoobah, el cual logra llegar al top 5 y ahí INXS consigue su tercer disco de oro. Los críticos comentaban: "INXS tiene un estilo definitivo, un sonido instantáneamente reconocible que no se confunde con otra banda del país". El grupo realizaba por todo el país el tour: "Una brilliante band de musica amenizara espectaculo", con un total de 78 presentaciones en vivo.
En 1983 firman con Atlantic Record para Norteamérica y en febrero hacen su debut en América del Norte con su single "The one thing". El video de este tema entra en rotación en Mtv, (cave mencionar que INXS fue uno de los primeros grupos extranjeros que logra entrar en la rotación de Mtv), la canción llega al top 30 de EEUU. La revista Rolling Stones declara al álbum: "original en la propuesta y animado en la ejecución... entre la actual plaga de discos idénticos de synth-pop, Shabooh Shoobah no son sólo canciones para bailar". "Don't Change" empieza a estar entre los más pedidos en las cadenas musicales. En marzo INXS debuta con una maratónica gira por EEUU.En mayo la banda toca primero en la ciudad de Nueva York, apareciendo en un show en el Ritz.En el mismo mes, aparecen en el mismísimo "US Festival" en California (foto). En agosto del mismo año Atlantic realiza "Dekadance", un mini álbum que contiene remixes de cuatro canciones de Shabooh Shoobah. En setiembre graban "Original sin" en la estación Power de Nueva York con la producción de Nile Rodgers, y Daryl Hall y Dave Skinner haciendo coros. Comienzan la grabación del 4º álbum en los estudios "Manor" en Inglaterra. Producido por Nick Launay, "The Swing" es terminado en Australia en diciembre del mismo año.
En enero de 1984 "Original sin" es número 1 en los chart australianos. INXS toca a capacidad completa durante un tour por todo el país y en febrero la banda se embarca en su primer tour mundial, The swing debuta en el número 1 de los charts australianos. En mayo "The swing" es presentado en América. Debutan en Londres con una actuación en el "Astoria". En junio "Original sin" llega al número 1 en Francia, un mes después, se editan en EEUU los dos primeros álbumes: "INXS" y "Underneath the colours". En setiembre comienza el tour en Norteamérica durante 3 meses concluyendo con un show a sala repleta en el "Hollywood Palladium". En diciembre de 1984 Original sin llega al puesto número 1 de los charts de ARGENTINA.
En 1985 hacen presentaciones en vivo para un total de 50.000 personas en 3 shows de verano en Australia, incluyendo una presentación para 20.000 personas con la capacidad completa en el "Adelaide Football Park". The swing certifica platino en ventas en todo el país, rankeado como uno de los cinco álbumes más vendidos en la historia de la música Australiana. En marzo comienzan a grabar su 5º álbum en los estudios "Rhinoceros" en Sydney con la producción de Chris Thomas. En mayo la banda gana 7 premios Countdown Awards, (equivalente al Grammy Norteamericano). En julio tocan para el "Live Aid" en el "Entertainment Centre" de Sydney, esta actuación se trasmite en todo el mundo. En agosto comienzan a trabajar con el nuevo álbum: "Listen like thieves", que es terminado en los estudios "Air" en Londres y editado en octubre del mismo año; el primer single en Norteamérica fue "This Time". La revista Rolling Stones dice: "Los INXS rockean con pasión y sellan el trato con un golpe al revés que chantajeará a tus pies". En el mismo mes de octubre hacen una pequeña gira por Sudamérica, donde se presentan por primera vez en Argentina el 12 de octubre.
En noviembre la banda regresa a Australia para el concierto de caridad "Rockin' the Royals" con la presencia del Príncipe Carlos y la Princesa Diana. Por Norteamérica, el tour comienza con entradas agotadas por toda la costa oeste. En diciembre "Atlantic video" lanza el video de largaduración: "The Swing & Other Stories". En este mismo mes hacen una presentación el el teatro "Beacon" de Nueva York.
En 1986 se edita "What you need", segundo single de Listen like thieves. INXS toca en Nueva Zelanda y Europa, tras volver a Norteamérica a principios de febrero. En marzo Listen like thieves certifica disco de oro en EEUU y rápidamente llega al platino. What you need es el 1º top ten single de la banda en América, que luego entra en el top 5. La banda se toma un respiro para dedicarse a sus proyectos individuales: Michael comienza a filmar "Dogs in the Space", dirigida por Richard Lowenstein. Hutchence comienza con críticas favorables en su debut en la película, cuya banda de sonido incluye la canción solista de Michael: "Rooms for the memory". Andrew produce el single solista de la cantante Jenny Morris (corista de INXS en la gira), el cual llega al top ten en Australia y al disco de oro. Tim se va a pescar.
En Australia, donde Listen like thieves llega al triple platino, INXS gana 3 premios Countdown Awards más. En mayo INXS vuelve con el tour mundial "If you got it shake it" (si lo tienes sacúdelo), y en julio hacen tour de 45 presentaciones en Norteamérica.
Listen like thieves corta un nuevo single "Kiss the dirt (falling down the mountain)". INXS vuelve a Australia con se triunfante tour. Jon produce a Richar Clapton, el abuelo del rock 'n roll australiano y en octubre Atlantic video lanza "What you need" (compilación de videos).
En enero de 1987 realizan el extraordinario tour "Australia made" por todo el país. El grupo toca para 200.000 fans en todos el país, con otras 8 bandas australianas. La grabación de su próximo álbum toma lugar nuevamente en "Rhinoceros" en Sydney y en el estudio "De La Grande Armée" en Paris, con Chris Thomas en la producción nuevamente. El 16 octubre comienza en EEUU el tour "Calling all nations". El 19 del mismo mes lanzan "Kick", sexto álbum de INXS. Primero se presentan en América del Norte, siguiendo un tour en diciembre por Inglaterra.
En enero de 1988 Kick certifica simultáneamente oro y platino. El álbum se convertiría en cuádruple platino en Inglaterra. El primer single, "Need you tonight", se convierte en el primer single de INXS número 1 en EEUU. Incentivados por el suceso de Kick, el catálogo de EEUU incrementa las ventas: The Swing y Shabooh Shoobah certifican disco de oro y Listen like thieves platino. En marzo reanudan un tour por EEUU. INXS toca con capacidad completa durante 3 shows en el "Radio City Music Hall" en Nueva York. Atlantic video lanza "Kick the video Flick", el cual llega al platino en EEUU. El segundo single de Kick, "Devil inside", llega al top 5. En mayo comienza la tercera parte del tour por los EEUU. New sensation fue el tercer corte y llegó hasta top 5 en EEUU. En agosto se inicia la cuarta parte del tour por EEUU, incluyendo tres actuaciones en Nueva York: en el "Madison Square Garden", en "Meadowlands Arena" y en "Nassau Coliseum".
Kick lanza el cuarto corte: "Never tear us apart" y en septiembre INXS arrasa en los Mtv Video Music Awards. Need you tonight/Mediate gana en 5 categorías: mejor video, mejor video de un grupo, mejor edición, video revelación y el premio de la elección del público. Cierran el tour por EEUU e INXS se dirige a Japón, luego vuelven a Australia en el tour "Record breaking homecoming" (rompiendo records volviendo a casa).
En enero de 1989 INXS obtiene su primera nominación al Grammy por mejor actuación de un grupo de rock. La banda también participa por los BP en Inglaterra y por el premio Juno en Canadá. Después de 16 meses en gira, INXS finalmente se toma un respiro. Durante este tiempo, se concluyen los proyectos individuales: Michael graba el álbum "Max Q" con Ollie Olsen. En su segunda aparición cinematográfica, interpreta al poeta Percy Sunghe Shelley en "Frankestein Unbound" de Roger Corman. Andrew produce el segundo disco solista de Jenny Morris, "Shiver", que certifica triple platino en Australia. Tim produce documentales sobre pesca, Fish in Space. Jon y Kirk hacen contribuciones a la música mientras Tim sigue pescando. Garry trabaja con Absent friends, coproduciendo el álbum con Sean Kelly, miembro de la banda. En noviembre INXS se reúne para comenzar a realizar canciones y en diciembre comienzan a grabar su nuevo álbum, con la producción de Chris Thomas (su tercer proyecto consecutivo con INXS).
En enero de 1990 tras la interrupción de las vacaciones, INXS continúa grabando. En marzo el grupo toma una pequeña interrupción de la grabación mientras Michael y Andrew escriben más canciones y Jon hace lo mismo en su casa. Se resumen las canciones realizadas, seguido al retorno al estudio para completar la grabación del nuevo álbum, titulado más tarde como "X". En junio Michael y Chris Thomas comienzan a mezclar el álbum en Londres. Andrew toca en vivo junto a Jenny Morris,incluyendo la apertura del tour de Prince en Francia y Alemania. Tim y Kirk producen a la banda australiana Crash Politics. En agosto se lanza "Suicide blonde", primer single del nuevo disco. El video de este tema es dirigido por Richard Lowenstein. El 6 de setiembre tocan en vivo en Los Angeles en el show de los Mtv Video Music Awards en donde presentan el primer single de "X" Suicide Blonde. El 21de septiembre, se lanza el séptimo álbum "X". La banda se prepara para una gira mundial 90 - 91, que comienza en octubre. El 24 de septiembre Suicide Blonde certifica oro en Australia. El 1de octubre comienza el tour X en el norte australiano. Fans de toda Australia vuelan para ser testigos del primer show de INXS después de 2 años. X llega al platino en Australia una semana después de su lanzamiento. El 1 de noviembre comienzan el tour europeo "Factor X" en Holanda. El 28 de noviembre tocan el primero de cuanto shows en las arenas de Wembley en Londres. El 9 de diciembre los camiones chocan por las condiciones ventosas en el camino a Glasgow y por segunda vez en 10 años de historia de giras de la banda, INXS es forzado a cancelar un recital. El 17 de diciembre completan el año tocando en el teatro the point de Dublín. Es el primero de muchos shows memorables del tour X Factor. El 31 de diciembre Westwood one emite su especial de INXS en víspera de año nuevo para todo EEUU.
En enero de 1991 tocan en México para 50.000 y 1.000 guardias armados llevados para contener a la excitada multitud. INXS es la primera banda de rock en tocar en México desde The Doors, hacían casi 20 años. El 19 de enero actúa en Rock in Río en Brasil para más de 100.000 personas y el 22 de enero se presentan en Argentina en el estadio de River Plate. El 28 de enero presentan el single "Disappear" en los American Music Awards y dos días después tocan en el Arsenio Hall. En este mes empiezan a grabar algunas actuaciones en vivo para el álbum en vivo: "Live Baby Live", el 22 y 23 graban el show en el Spectrum en Filadelfia, el 15 y 16 de marzo graban sus 2 presentaciones en el Rosemount de Chicago.
El 11 de marzo salen en venta las entradas para el tour australiano. Un récord de 22.000 entradas vendidas en 20 minutos en Sydney. El 4 de abril X llega al doble platino en Australia. El 13 de julio se presentan en el "Summer XS" para un total de 72.000 fans en Wembley. Filmado por David Mallet para realizar luego un video largaduración: "Live Baby Live". El 14 de julio graban "Shining star" escrita por Andrew en Londres. El 16 de agosto terminan de mezclar y coproducir con Mark Opitz "Live Baby Live" en los estudios Rhinoceros en Sydney. El 10 y 11 de octubre graban el video de "Shining star" en el club "Phoenician" de Sydney, dirigido por David Mallet. Finalmente el 11 de noviembre lanzan el álbum y el video "Live Baby Live".

Michael y Andrew se conocieron en la escuela secundaria cuando Andrew separó a Michael de una pelea en la que estaba involucrado. Inmediatamente se hicieron amigos y se dieron cuenta de que estaban interesado en una sóla cosa, la música.
Todo comenzó cuando Kirk Pengilly y su mejor amigo de la escuela Tim Farriss decidieron desintegrar el grupo Giness, grupo que habían formado en 1971. Fue ahí cuando Tim tuvo la idea de juntar los talentos de su grupo con el grupo de su hermano menor Andrew: Michael, Garry y Andrew mismo.
El único factor necesario para completar la formación era un baterista. Si bien Jon Farriss había sido rechazado por el grupo Giness; en su segunda audición tuvo más suerte. Y así en marzo de 1977 la sexta pieza de la banda permitió que naciera lo que en ese tiempo fue "The Farriss Brothers".
En 1978 la banda se traslada desde Sydney hasta Perth, 3279 Km a través del interior de Australia. "The Farriss Brothers" pasa diez meses escribiendo, realizando y tocando en hoteles locales y pequeños pueblos.
En 1979 vuelven a Sydney, tocan primero en shows en el distrito del centro de la ciudad. Rebautizados como INXS, debutan en vivo el 1º de septiembre en el "Oceanview Hotel" en Toukley, y en mayo de 1980 sacan sus dos primeros singles: "Simple Simon" y "We are the vegetables", realizado en Australia por el sello independiente Deluxe. También fueron lanzados en Francia.
En octubre editan su álbum debut: "INXS", realizado en Australia, del cual se extrajo el single, y hit en Australia en aquel momento: "Just Keep Walking". El grupo hace una gira por toda la costa australiana recorriendo Melbourne, Sydney, Bresbane y tocando 7 noches a la semana.
En 1981 comienzan las giras "en serio": el tour "Fear and loathing" (miendo y aborrecimiento), el tour "Campus" (Ciudad Universitaria), el tour "Stay Young" (permanecer joven), el tour "With no name" (sin nombre), con un total de 300 presentaciones. En marzo de ese mismo año se edita en Australia el single "The Loved one", cover del hit australiano número 1 "The loved ones" de una banda de Melbourne de los 60, (INXS graba esta canción otra vez en 1987 para el álbum Kick). En octubre sacan su segundo álbum: "Underneath the colours". Exitoso en críticas y comercialmente, llega al top 15 de los charts australianos.
En enero de 1982 hacen una gira por primera vez en Nueva Zelanda. Una vez de vuelta en Australia graban "The one thing", producido por Mark Opitz. En abril Andrew, Michael y Kirk se lanzan en peregrinación por Inglaterra y América. En junio comienzan a grabar su tercer álbum: "Shabooh Shoobah", producido por Mark Opitz. En julio INXS firma con WEA Records para Australia. Se lanza el single The one thing, que llega al top 15. En octubre lanzan en Australia Shabooh Shoobah, el cual logra llegar al top 5 y ahí INXS consigue su tercer disco de oro. Los críticos comentaban: "INXS tiene un estilo definitivo, un sonido instantáneamente reconocible que no se confunde con otra banda del país". El grupo realizaba por todo el país el tour: "Una brilliante band de musica amenizara espectaculo", con un total de 78 presentaciones en vivo.
En 1983 firman con Atlantic Record para Norteamérica y en febrero hacen su debut en América del Norte con su single "The one thing". El video de este tema entra en rotación en Mtv, (cave mencionar que INXS fue uno de los primeros grupos extranjeros que logra entrar en la rotación de Mtv), la canción llega al top 30 de EEUU. La revista Rolling Stones declara al álbum: "original en la propuesta y animado en la ejecución... entre la actual plaga de discos idénticos de synth-pop, Shabooh Shoobah no son sólo canciones para bailar". "Don't Change" empieza a estar entre los más pedidos en las cadenas musicales. En marzo INXS debuta con una maratónica gira por EEUU.En mayo la banda toca primero en la ciudad de Nueva York, apareciendo en un show en el Ritz.En el mismo mes, aparecen en el mismísimo "US Festival" en California (foto). En agosto del mismo año Atlantic realiza "Dekadance", un mini álbum que contiene remixes de cuatro canciones de Shabooh Shoobah. En setiembre graban "Original sin" en la estación Power de Nueva York con la producción de Nile Rodgers, y Daryl Hall y Dave Skinner haciendo coros. Comienzan la grabación del 4º álbum en los estudios "Manor" en Inglaterra. Producido por Nick Launay, "The Swing" es terminado en Australia en diciembre del mismo año.
En enero de 1984 "Original sin" es número 1 en los chart australianos. INXS toca a capacidad completa durante un tour por todo el país y en febrero la banda se embarca en su primer tour mundial, The swing debuta en el número 1 de los charts australianos. En mayo "The swing" es presentado en América. Debutan en Londres con una actuación en el "Astoria". En junio "Original sin" llega al número 1 en Francia, un mes después, se editan en EEUU los dos primeros álbumes: "INXS" y "Underneath the colours". En setiembre comienza el tour en Norteamérica durante 3 meses concluyendo con un show a sala repleta en el "Hollywood Palladium". En diciembre de 1984 Original sin llega al puesto número 1 de los charts de ARGENTINA.
En 1985 hacen presentaciones en vivo para un total de 50.000 personas en 3 shows de verano en Australia, incluyendo una presentación para 20.000 personas con la capacidad completa en el "Adelaide Football Park". The swing certifica platino en ventas en todo el país, rankeado como uno de los cinco álbumes más vendidos en la historia de la música Australiana. En marzo comienzan a grabar su 5º álbum en los estudios "Rhinoceros" en Sydney con la producción de Chris Thomas. En mayo la banda gana 7 premios Countdown Awards, (equivalente al Grammy Norteamericano). En julio tocan para el "Live Aid" en el "Entertainment Centre" de Sydney, esta actuación se trasmite en todo el mundo. En agosto comienzan a trabajar con el nuevo álbum: "Listen like thieves", que es terminado en los estudios "Air" en Londres y editado en octubre del mismo año; el primer single en Norteamérica fue "This Time". La revista Rolling Stones dice: "Los INXS rockean con pasión y sellan el trato con un golpe al revés que chantajeará a tus pies". En el mismo mes de octubre hacen una pequeña gira por Sudamérica, donde se presentan por primera vez en Argentina el 12 de octubre.
En noviembre la banda regresa a Australia para el concierto de caridad "Rockin' the Royals" con la presencia del Príncipe Carlos y la Princesa Diana. Por Norteamérica, el tour comienza con entradas agotadas por toda la costa oeste. En diciembre "Atlantic video" lanza el video de largaduración: "The Swing & Other Stories". En este mismo mes hacen una presentación el el teatro "Beacon" de Nueva York.
En 1986 se edita "What you need", segundo single de Listen like thieves. INXS toca en Nueva Zelanda y Europa, tras volver a Norteamérica a principios de febrero. En marzo Listen like thieves certifica disco de oro en EEUU y rápidamente llega al platino. What you need es el 1º top ten single de la banda en América, que luego entra en el top 5. La banda se toma un respiro para dedicarse a sus proyectos individuales: Michael comienza a filmar "Dogs in the Space", dirigida por Richard Lowenstein. Hutchence comienza con críticas favorables en su debut en la película, cuya banda de sonido incluye la canción solista de Michael: "Rooms for the memory". Andrew produce el single solista de la cantante Jenny Morris (corista de INXS en la gira), el cual llega al top ten en Australia y al disco de oro. Tim se va a pescar.
En Australia, donde Listen like thieves llega al triple platino, INXS gana 3 premios Countdown Awards más. En mayo INXS vuelve con el tour mundial "If you got it shake it" (si lo tienes sacúdelo), y en julio hacen tour de 45 presentaciones en Norteamérica.
Listen like thieves corta un nuevo single "Kiss the dirt (falling down the mountain)". INXS vuelve a Australia con se triunfante tour. Jon produce a Richar Clapton, el abuelo del rock 'n roll australiano y en octubre Atlantic video lanza "What you need" (compilación de videos).
En enero de 1987 realizan el extraordinario tour "Australia made" por todo el país. El grupo toca para 200.000 fans en todos el país, con otras 8 bandas australianas. La grabación de su próximo álbum toma lugar nuevamente en "Rhinoceros" en Sydney y en el estudio "De La Grande Armée" en Paris, con Chris Thomas en la producción nuevamente. El 16 octubre comienza en EEUU el tour "Calling all nations". El 19 del mismo mes lanzan "Kick", sexto álbum de INXS. Primero se presentan en América del Norte, siguiendo un tour en diciembre por Inglaterra.
En enero de 1988 Kick certifica simultáneamente oro y platino. El álbum se convertiría en cuádruple platino en Inglaterra. El primer single, "Need you tonight", se convierte en el primer single de INXS número 1 en EEUU. Incentivados por el suceso de Kick, el catálogo de EEUU incrementa las ventas: The Swing y Shabooh Shoobah certifican disco de oro y Listen like thieves platino. En marzo reanudan un tour por EEUU. INXS toca con capacidad completa durante 3 shows en el "Radio City Music Hall" en Nueva York. Atlantic video lanza "Kick the video Flick", el cual llega al platino en EEUU. El segundo single de Kick, "Devil inside", llega al top 5. En mayo comienza la tercera parte del tour por los EEUU. New sensation fue el tercer corte y llegó hasta top 5 en EEUU. En agosto se inicia la cuarta parte del tour por EEUU, incluyendo tres actuaciones en Nueva York: en el "Madison Square Garden", en "Meadowlands Arena" y en "Nassau Coliseum".
Kick lanza el cuarto corte: "Never tear us apart" y en septiembre INXS arrasa en los Mtv Video Music Awards. Need you tonight/Mediate gana en 5 categorías: mejor video, mejor video de un grupo, mejor edición, video revelación y el premio de la elección del público. Cierran el tour por EEUU e INXS se dirige a Japón, luego vuelven a Australia en el tour "Record breaking homecoming" (rompiendo records volviendo a casa).
En enero de 1989 INXS obtiene su primera nominación al Grammy por mejor actuación de un grupo de rock. La banda también participa por los BP en Inglaterra y por el premio Juno en Canadá. Después de 16 meses en gira, INXS finalmente se toma un respiro. Durante este tiempo, se concluyen los proyectos individuales: Michael graba el álbum "Max Q" con Ollie Olsen. En su segunda aparición cinematográfica, interpreta al poeta Percy Sunghe Shelley en "Frankestein Unbound" de Roger Corman. Andrew produce el segundo disco solista de Jenny Morris, "Shiver", que certifica triple platino en Australia. Tim produce documentales sobre pesca, Fish in Space. Jon y Kirk hacen contribuciones a la música mientras Tim sigue pescando. Garry trabaja con Absent friends, coproduciendo el álbum con Sean Kelly, miembro de la banda. En noviembre INXS se reúne para comenzar a realizar canciones y en diciembre comienzan a grabar su nuevo álbum, con la producción de Chris Thomas (su tercer proyecto consecutivo con INXS).
En enero de 1990 tras la interrupción de las vacaciones, INXS continúa grabando. En marzo el grupo toma una pequeña interrupción de la grabación mientras Michael y Andrew escriben más canciones y Jon hace lo mismo en su casa. Se resumen las canciones realizadas, seguido al retorno al estudio para completar la grabación del nuevo álbum, titulado más tarde como "X". En junio Michael y Chris Thomas comienzan a mezclar el álbum en Londres. Andrew toca en vivo junto a Jenny Morris,incluyendo la apertura del tour de Prince en Francia y Alemania. Tim y Kirk producen a la banda australiana Crash Politics. En agosto se lanza "Suicide blonde", primer single del nuevo disco. El video de este tema es dirigido por Richard Lowenstein. El 6 de setiembre tocan en vivo en Los Angeles en el show de los Mtv Video Music Awards en donde presentan el primer single de "X" Suicide Blonde. El 21de septiembre, se lanza el séptimo álbum "X". La banda se prepara para una gira mundial 90 - 91, que comienza en octubre. El 24 de septiembre Suicide Blonde certifica oro en Australia. El 1de octubre comienza el tour X en el norte australiano. Fans de toda Australia vuelan para ser testigos del primer show de INXS después de 2 años. X llega al platino en Australia una semana después de su lanzamiento. El 1 de noviembre comienzan el tour europeo "Factor X" en Holanda. El 28 de noviembre tocan el primero de cuanto shows en las arenas de Wembley en Londres. El 9 de diciembre los camiones chocan por las condiciones ventosas en el camino a Glasgow y por segunda vez en 10 años de historia de giras de la banda, INXS es forzado a cancelar un recital. El 17 de diciembre completan el año tocando en el teatro the point de Dublín. Es el primero de muchos shows memorables del tour X Factor. El 31 de diciembre Westwood one emite su especial de INXS en víspera de año nuevo para todo EEUU.
En enero de 1991 tocan en México para 50.000 y 1.000 guardias armados llevados para contener a la excitada multitud. INXS es la primera banda de rock en tocar en México desde The Doors, hacían casi 20 años. El 19 de enero actúa en Rock in Río en Brasil para más de 100.000 personas y el 22 de enero se presentan en Argentina en el estadio de River Plate. El 28 de enero presentan el single "Disappear" en los American Music Awards y dos días después tocan en el Arsenio Hall. En este mes empiezan a grabar algunas actuaciones en vivo para el álbum en vivo: "Live Baby Live", el 22 y 23 graban el show en el Spectrum en Filadelfia, el 15 y 16 de marzo graban sus 2 presentaciones en el Rosemount de Chicago.
El 11 de marzo salen en venta las entradas para el tour australiano. Un récord de 22.000 entradas vendidas en 20 minutos en Sydney. El 4 de abril X llega al doble platino en Australia. El 13 de julio se presentan en el "Summer XS" para un total de 72.000 fans en Wembley. Filmado por David Mallet para realizar luego un video largaduración: "Live Baby Live". El 14 de julio graban "Shining star" escrita por Andrew en Londres. El 16 de agosto terminan de mezclar y coproducir con Mark Opitz "Live Baby Live" en los estudios Rhinoceros en Sydney. El 10 y 11 de octubre graban el video de "Shining star" en el club "Phoenician" de Sydney, dirigido por David Mallet. Finalmente el 11 de noviembre lanzan el álbum y el video "Live Baby Live".
