FALKLAND Islanders voted to remain British by an overwhelming 98.8 per cent, it was revealed early today.
Out of 1,517 who voted, only THREE said they didn’t want the isles to remain a British Overseas Territory.
The result followed two days of polling and sent a clear message to Argentina: Back off once and for all.
The historic poll was staged in response to relentless sabre-rattling from Buenos Aires over the isles.
There was a carnival atmosphere in capital Port Stanley as voters arrived on horses and in Land Rovers festooned with patriotic bunting. A 92 per cent turnout of the 1,672 eligible voters — in a population of about 2,800 — made their feelings crystal clear. There was one spoiled vote.
Homes and shops were swamped with posters and flags and people took to the streets to celebrate the historic say on their future.
Outside observers monitored the referendum so islanders could prove it was free and fair.
Voters were asked whether they wanted to remain a British Overseas Territory.
Bullish Argentina has said the poll has no legal standing and it will not affect its claim to the Falklands.
President Cristina Kirchner has whipped up national fervour over the islands in a desperate bid to divert attention from domestic woes.
David Cameron’s official spokesman said yesterday: “The Prime Minister’s message to the Argentine government has been and will remain very clear. The sovereignty of the Falkland Islands can only be a matter for the islanders themselves.
“That is why it’s right they can make their voice heard today.”
Sukey Cameron, the Falklands Government Representative, added: “We have a right to self-determination.”

More math conundrums. Out of the 1,672 eligible voters (take note of the word eligible @missing), 1,513 voted to stay British. That is 90.49%. Out of those who actually voted 99.7% said yes. I wonder why the others didn't vote? Not that it would have made any difference. Democracy in full effect, Argentina should really look to getting their own country in good working order before taking on another project, but I suppose the promise of the oil reserves there is what is really driving this useless campaign.

I fail to see the meaning of this vote considering nearly all who voted are of British decent, as the Argentinians on the land were expelled in the 18th century. This is just mere historical fact.
