Jason Backer + Marty friedman

Jason Becker es un guitarrista estadounidense, considerado por muchos críticos como uno de los más virtuosos en su género.
Nacido el 22 de julio de 1969, en la ciudad de Richmond en California, Estados Unidos. Comenzó a tocar la guitarra desde muy joven, debido a que su padre y su tío eran guitarristas. Tocaba temas de Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Brian May, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen e Yngwie Malmsteen etc, además como el mismo afirma en su video "The legendary guitar of Jason Becker", aprendió a tocar de oído y de forma autodidacta, ya que traspasó ampliamente las influencias de su tío y su padre: "escuchaba canciones de Yngwie Malmsteen en sus conciertos o una obra de Stravinski y luego tocaba esas mismas canciones de oído en mi guitarra, los fallos que cometía al tocarlas de oído hicieron que desarrollase mis propias frases".
A los 16 años conoce a Marty Friedman, guitarrista que ya había editado un par de discos.





Cacophony

En plena adolescencia, conoció a Marty Friedman, y se unieron en “Cacophony“, grupo de metal técnico y exótico, en el cual logran una sincronización perfecta entre los dos.





Cacophony fue fundada por Mike Varney, antiguo dueño de la discográfica Roadrunner. Su primer disco, Speed Metal Symphony (1987), marca un nuevo estilo de solos de guitarra armoniosa, otorgándole a su música un aspecto más elaborado y sinfónico, unido con escalas y armonías exóticas occidentalizadas, éstas últimas provenientes de Friedman mientras que las influencias clásicas provenían de Becker. Editan su segundo y último álbum, Go Off! (1988), con temas más lentos y mélodicos que el anterior, y con una producción mejor que el primero.

Carrera Solista

Por supuesto, cabe destacar su primer disco en solitario, "Perpetual Burn" (1988), obra imprescindible en la colección de un guitarrista, mezcla perfecta de influencias orientales, neoclásicas y metal.

Gracias a su impresionante carrera, logra ingresar en la banda de David Lee Roth, lo que le abre las puertas de la fama (recordando que entró a la banda para sustituir al mismísimo Steve Vai).

1989 fue el año fatídico para Jason, le fue diagnosticada la enfermedad degenerativa “Esclerosis lateral amiotrófica”, una enfermedad que ataca progresivamente las neuronas que controlan el movimiento.

Becker comienza a perder la movilidad de su cuerpo, no puede tocar la guitarra y empieza a componer en un teclado, primero con las dos manos, luego con una. Primero dejó de caminar, luego quedó inmóvil una mano, la otra, el habla, la tráquea, la gesticulación. Hasta que pierde la movilidad casi total de su cuerpo por culpa de la enfermedad, llegando a poder mover únicamente los ojos.

Su padre Gary creó un software especialmente para que Jason se comunique a través del movimiento de sus ojos, y su amigo Mike Bemesderfer desarrolló el sistema en el que Jason compone música e incluso ejecuta sintetizadores.

Con este sistema informático logra componer su disco "Perspective" (1996), el cual, excepto un tema tocado por él,que es más bien una improvisación, está compuesto con su ordenador e interpretado a la guitarra por Michael Lee Firkins y una orquesta.



Posteriormente Jason ha lanzado dos discos más, "Raspberry Jams" (1999) y "Blackberry Jams"(2003), donde podemos encontrar canciones inéditas, demos, rarezas e improvisaciones.

Jason Becker, es un ejemplo a seguir de superación. Sus ganas de vivir, ilusión por la vida, el amor a su familia y la música, a permitido que a pesar de que los médicos solamente le daban 3 años de vida, Jason lleve ya 18 años luchando contra su enfermedad, se ha convertido en una leyenda en vida.

En la actualidad sólo puede mover los ojos, uno de sus pulgares y algunos músculos faciales; aunque las últimas noticias hablan de respuestas positivas en algunos otros músculos del cuerpo.

En el 2007 se edita un DVD con parte de la historia de su vida en el vídeo; The Legendary Guitar of Jason Becker.

Para el 2008 Jason, edita ; Collection; y recopila gran parte de los mejores temas de Jason, algunas versiones nunca antes escuchadas, y tres temas nuevos grabados gracias a la colaboracion de Marty Friedman, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Greg Howe y Michael Lee Firkins.

Además, sorprende a todos sus fans con el lanzamiento de su tan esperada guitarra Signature, mas un pedal de distorsion que emula aquellos legendarios sonidos de Perpetual Burn. Tras casi veinte años de espera, finalmente Paradise Guitars es la compania junto a la cual Jason Becker lanza su tan demorada y merecida guitarra signature. Su diseño se encuentra basado en la famosa superstrato multicolor Peavey con grandes numeros en el diapason, que utilizaba Becker durante principios de los 90.

Las señas distintivas de esta guitarra incluyen el inlay característico de Becker con grandes numeros en los trastes y el diseño de la pala que en palabras de Paradise Guitars fué un diseño exclusivo de Jason en el cual la marca no influyó. La guitarra será comercializada de dos modos distintos, un pack limitado a 70 unidades que incluirá muchos extras y otra serie de mayor número de unidades que incluiría únicamente estuche y certifiado de autenticidad .

Él, quien supo batirse en duelos de fuego con Marty Friedman en los discos de Cacophony e hizo maravillas en "A little ain't enough" de David Lee Roth. Es el mismo hijo de la selecta cantera de Mike Varney que en 1989, con apenas 20 años, tenía todo lo imaginable para convertirse en una estrella del rock con un presente brillante y un futuro aun más auspicioso...

La estrella de Jason no sólo no se opacó sino que aumentó su brillo natural, por varios factores; su vuelco a la espiritualidad (es miembro de una hermandad de autorrealización que toma elementos del hinduísmo y el yoga), el apoyo de sus padres, novia y amigos, y la música. De hecho, además de superar nada menos que los pronósticos de muerte, Jason publicó dos discos en ese período y está terminando un libro autobiográfico en medio de intensos tratamientos y terapias de rehabilitación.

Hoy, Jason se considera un tipo feliz porque ese mal apenas pudo quedarse con su movilidad pero no con su música y su vida.

''La gente se pregunta cómo puedo estar feliz y excitado por la vida sin poder moverme, o sin poder respirar a menos que sea a través de una máquina. Las razones más obvias son la gran familia y amigos que me bañan en su afecto todo el tiempo. Constantemente siento el cariño y el respeto de cada persona que encuentro y de fans de todo el mundo. Tengo tres CDs llenos de material de cuando todavía podía tocar, esperando para ser mezclado y utilizado. (...) Estoy escribiendo un libro y tengo una computadora en la que escribo la música que tengo en la cabeza. Este disco es una de las más grandes creaciones que realizó Jason Becker y está levemente por debajo del disco Perspective (1996, obra clásica/experimental/bluesera, altamente sofisticada, elaborada e interpretativa).
Este album ("Perpetual Burn" es instrumental en totalidad y comienza con "altitudes" que es una canción que parte muy lenta y con mucha melodía, posteriormente el tema evoluciona y llega a tener pasajes insospechados, sigue con el tema homónimo al disco el cual es el más shred y complejo del album, el resto descúbranlo ustedes.

El título del disco dice mucho porque estas grabaciones nunca han sido escuchadas...bueno hasta ahora. Las grabaciones están muy buenas y generan una atmósfera que solo Jason Becker nos puede entregar. También hay unos bonus track que son covers de distintas bandas o solistas del cual Jason junto con Cacophony recibieron sus influencias. Cabe destacar que a pesar que Jason Becker tenía su enfermedad bastante avanzada, de igual manera se las arregla para ejecutar los arpeggios de serrana con sweep picking technique (barridos).
Finalmente, espero que en honor a Becker realizen comentarios y todo tipo de apreciaciones que estimen convenientes.

Bonus track






Este es otro de los grandes albums que salían por aquel entonces. Acá hay participación de Jason Becker en 2 canciones; Saturation Point (punto de saturación) que es una canción bien metalera y Jewel (rubí ó piedra preciosa) que es totalmente lo contrario, es decir, mucho más interpretativa y llena de melodía armoniosa.
El mérito de este album pertenece a Marty Friedman porque los hit más recordados son ''Thunder March'' ; y ''Forbidden City'' que son sencillamente tremendas creaciones de Friedman y en las cuales Becker no participó pero aún así es importante mencionar que ambos guitarristas influyeron el uno al otro en sus creaciones posteriormente.
