Homenaje de las victimas del atentado a Word Trade Center
Los atentados del 11 de septiembre de 2001, fueron una serie de atentados suicidas que implicaron el secuestro de cuatro aviones de pasajeros por parte de 19 miembros de la red yihadista Al-Qaida.
Se dividieron en cuatro grupos de secuestradores, cada uno de ellos con un piloto que se encargaría de pilotar el avión una vez ya reducida la tripulación de la cabina. Los dos primeros aviones fueron los de los vuelos 11 de American Airlines y 175 de United Airlines, que fueron estrellados contra las torres gemelas del World Trade Center, un avión contra cada torre, haciendo que ambas se derrumbaran en las dos horas siguientes.
El tercer avión secuestrado fue el del vuelo 77 de American Airlines, que supuestamente impactó contra la esquina del Pentágono, en Virginia. El cuarto avión, que fue el del vuelo 93 de United Airlines, que no alcanzó ningún objetivo ya que los pasajeros y tripulantes intentaron recuperar el control y, debido a eso, se estrelló en un campo abierto, en Shanksville, Pensilvania.
Aparte de los 19 secuestradores hubo unas 2.973 personas fallecidas confirmadas y unas 24 continúan desaparecidas.
Este atentado se caracterizó por el empleo de aviones como armamento, creando una situación de temor mayor en todo el mundo occidental y dando comienzo a la Guerra contra el terrorismo. Los atentados del 11 de septiembre del 2001 fueron descritos por el Consejo de Seguridad de Naciones Unidas como horrendos ataques terroristas.

Las muertes se contaron por miles, pereciendo exactamente 2.973 personas, incluyendo 246 muertos en los cuatro aparatos estrellados (ninguno de los pasajeros de los aviones secuestrados sobrevivió), 2.602 en Nueva York muertos tanto dentro de las torres gemelas como a sus pies, y 125 muertos dentro del edificio del Péntagono. Entre las víctimas se contaban 343 bomberos, 23 policías del departamento de policía de Nueva York y 37 policías de la autoridad portuaria de Nueva York y Nueva Jersey. A fecha de hoy, aún permanecen 24 personas más entre la lista de desaparecidos.
Según las cifras presentadas por el Departamento de Salud en enero de 2002, 166 latinos y 81 latinas estuvieron entre los muertos del atentado terrorista de Al-Qaeda contra las Torres Gemelas, representando un 9% del total. De estos, 25 eran nacionales de la República Dominicana, 18 de Colombia, 13 de Ecuador, 6 de Cuba, 4 de Argentina y 1 de Chile. En otros sitios, se habla de 15 muertos de México, así como otros de El Salvador, Honduras, Jamaica, Perú, Venezuela, Paraguay y Guyana.
Los atentados supusieron el ataque terrorista de mayor importancia contra los Estados Unidos de América, superando al atentado de Oklahoma City cometido por los terroristas de ultraderecha Timothy McVeigh y Terry Nichols que causó 168 muertos y los ataques llevados a cabo por células de Al-Qaeda en 1998 contra embajadas de EEUU en los paises africanos de Kenia y Tanzania.

Tribute to the victims of the Word Trade Center bombing
The attacks of September 11, 2001, were a series of suicide bombings that involved the hijacking of four jetliners by 19 members of the jihadist Al-Qaida network.
They were divided in four groups of hijackers, each with a driver who would be responsible for piloting the plane after it had reduced the cabin crew. The first two aircraft were those of American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines 175, which were flown into the twin towers of World Trade Center, one plane into each tower, causing both to collapse within two hours.
The third hijacked plane was that of American Airlines Flight 77 that allegedly crashed into the corner of the Pentagon in Virginia. The fourth plane, which was that of United Airlines Flight 93, which did not reach any goal and that passengers and crew tried to regain control and, because of that, crashed in an open field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Apart from the 19 hijackers were about 2,973 people confirmed dead and about 24 are still missing.
This attack was characterized by the use of aircraft as weapons, creating a situation of greater fear throughout the Western world and beginning the war against terrorism. The attacks of September 11, 2001 were described by the Security Council United Nations as horrendous terrorist attacks.

The deaths were counted by thousands, killing just 2,973 people, including 246 dead in crashed four planes (none of the passengers of the hijacked aircraft survived), 2602 in New York killed inside the twin towers and their feet, and 125 dead inside the Pentagon building.
