Las madres que tengan la opción de elegir entre un parto natural y una cesárea harían bien en elegir la primera opción. Según una investigación reciente, el parto natural puede mejorar el desarrollo del cerebro del bebé. El parto vaginal desencadena la expresión de una proteína en el cerebro de los recién nacidos que mejora el desarrollo y el funcionamiento de éste, asegura el estudio publicado en la última edición de PLoS ONE. Y este beneficio se extiende hasta la edad adulta. Esta proteína aparentemente mágica se llama "proteína mitocondrial desacoplarte 2", también conocida como UCP2. Anteriormente se había determinado que la UCP2 era importante en el desarrollo de ciertas neuronas y circuitos cerebrales que son responsables de la memoria a corto y largo plazo. Y esta proteína también está involucrada en el metabolismo celular de las grasas, uno de los componentes claves de la leche materna. Por lo tanto, la UCP2 no sólo favorece la transición del bebé hacia la lactancia materna, sino que también apoya el desarrollo cerebral. Todavía se desconoce exactamente de qué forma el parto natural desencadena la expresión de esta proteína tan beneficiosa. Supongo que podría ser algo bioquímico u hormonal. O quizás tiene que ver con la estimulación producto del movimiento. Lo que sí está claro es que las cesáreas disminuyen esta proteína. En los partos por cesárea se produce el nacimiento del feto mediante una incisión quirúrgica a través de la pared abdominal y del útero. Y aunque algunas cesáreas se practican en situaciones críticas y para prevenir determinados problemas, otras se realizan por decisión propia de la madre, una opción que preocupa cada vez más a los médicos. “Estos resultados demuestran un papel potencialmente crítico de la UCP2 en el correcto desarrollo de los circuitos cerebrales y en los comportamientos relacionados”, declaró Tamas Horvath de la Escuela de Medicina de Yale en un comunicado de prensa. “El aumento de las cesáreas elegidas por conveniencia y no por necesidades médicas podría tener un inesperado efecto de retraso en el desarrollo y el funcionamiento del cerebro de los seres humanos”. Además, existe una gran cantidad de riesgos asociados con las cesáreas. Por esta razón, es recomendable que las madres se decidan por el parto vaginal siempre que sea posible, ya que según indica este último estudio, también es lo mejor para el bebé.
